What to do to help your small business website blog get read by more people
Having a blog as part of your small business website is a recommended way to give your website a regular boost of fresh new content; and Google (as well as other search engines) favour such websites. But, is it enough just to write a post and press publish? Well, no not really, if you truly want to have a chance of it getting noticed.
Break up text with videos and images
Keep your blog post more engaging by inserting a relevant image or two where possible. It breaks up lots of texts and makes the page look more interesting. Please do remember to provide some ALT TEXT for your images too, this helps from an accessibility point of view as well as website blog optimisation.
If your blog post lends itself to having a video in it, great, that's even better than an image. Users and Google (and the like!) love video. I would recommend you upload the video onto You Tube and then embed the video onto the blog post, instead of actually hosting the big fat heavy video on your actual website blog, as this will slow things down for your readers; and as we all know, a slow website is a bad frustrating one! Structure and tag your blog post clearly

Spread the word on your social media platforms
Once you've written your blog post, and you've checked it all over thoroughly to ensure there are no annoying typos, that it reads as you intend, looks appealing to the eye and that you've completed the check list provided in the article above by Hostgator, once you've pressed publish, it's really important to promote your blog post. Promotion will help the blog post be read and this will raise the credibility of your blog with the likes of Google. So, go ahead and promote the blog post on all your social media platforms, whether this is Facebook, Instagram, Linked In, Twitter or several of these. I always recommend posting on social media alongside an image, rather than a text only post. A further recommendation is to use a url shortening tool for the url of your blog post, these are shorter (as the word infers) which makes them more user-friendly. Plus you can track these short urls too so you know how many clicks it's had. My go-to tool for this was always the Google version, but this has now been discontinued sadly and I'm still trying different ones to find my preferred alternative. How can Amatsu Therapy help alleviate the symptoms of Osteoarthritis?
Amatsu works on the soft tissues around the joint – the muscles, ligaments and fascia - to loosen over-tight muscles and wake up muscles that aren't working optimally. This restores the correct tensions and removes any abnormal twists and pulls on the joints. This in turns takes the pressure off the areas that are ‘rubbing’ together. We do not put joints back into position, this happens naturally when correct tensions are restored during an Amatsu Therapy treatment by a process called ‘Biotensegrity’. As Amatsu Therapy practitioners our aim is to get joints “floating” so that the joint has plenty of room around it and the bones move exactly as they were designed to, supported by ligaments at the right tension, and bones therefore do not rub together when the body moves. Why is colour an important decision?
When starting your own business it's very important to consider the colours of your business very carefully and then stick to a maximum of 3 colours that you use across all customer touch points - shop or office decor, leaflets, logo, website colours. This is part of your brand identity which, over time, enables people to know a particular communication is coming from the authentic you. So it's important to choose carefully so you can be consistent with your brand colours for years to come, not turn your target audience off with your colour choice and for those colours not to clash.

Your main colour and up to 2 supporting colours
With answers from the above sections, work out which colour is most strongly connected with your brand (your primary colour in the diagram below) and have this as your main brand colour. Use a colour wheel, similar to the one below to check if the other colours that have come up during this exercise, actually complement your primary colour. If they do, then great. If not, what colours do complement your main brand colour? This is deduced best by using the colours that are diagonally opposite your primary colour on the wheel.

I've met a few people recently who run their own small business and have told me that they just don't know where to start with self-promotion and therefore don't advertise themselves at all. It's great that their business is ticking along through one of the best forms of marketing - word of mouth - however is this really enough in today's world? Does it honestly help to satisfy the self-employed financial anxieties that we all suffer from? It seems not, but not knowing where to start, combined with a lack of time to invest in finding out, keeps them stuck in a rut.
What's my advice to them, and to you if you're in the same boat?
Step 1 - Take a deep breath and make time to invest in this
Self-promotion can be a tough thing to do as it often means for a fair few small businesses, stepping out of their comfort zone and using a computer or technology that is, to be honest, a bit baffling.
Step 2 - Know your target audience
First and foremost know who your prospective customers are and where they go to find the product or service you offer. This previous blog post will help you identify your target audience if you need help in this area.
Step 3 - Get your business on social media
Depending on what you discovered in Step 2, decide which social media channels are right for your business and prioritise them according to audience reach i.e. the number of prospective customers who are using that channel. Focus then, on getting the one that you ranked number 1 up and running. As a crude rule of thumb:
Step 4 - Get yourself a website
This doesn't have to be all singing, all dancing but, it does need to have an impact on your target audience, be professional as well as informative. Most people these days won't do business with anyone unless they've researched you first and ideally seen reviews from your previous/existing customers. Prospective customers also like to have all their questions answered before they commit to coming to you, hence FAQs are extremely popular and highly recommended. Much of this information could be gleaned from a social media page, but not all the information is as easy to find as it would be on a well-designed website. We, as consumers, are all too impatient these days and want things fast, so unless demands of prospective customers can be met quickly and easily, you'll lose out on their custom as they move on to find another business that satisfies their needs there and then.
Why do I recommend social media before a website?
There is no doubt that having both is essential. I think though it's important for small businesses to take one step at a time and invest their time and money wisely. Because, let's face it, time and money are somewhat scarce when running your own business. Being active on social media and linking your posts/tweets back to your website, is a really effective way to get your website ranked higher on search engines. This is more commonly referred to as helping your SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) of your business website. However, if you have a website but no active social media channels, then it makes your website hard for people to find organically. Therefore, I believe it's more effective and efficient to get your social media channel up and running, be confident in posting/tweeting, gain a following, hopefully gain some new customers and then invest in getting yourself a website.
