Amatsu, originating in Japan, is an incredibly effective and unique, soft tissue therapy that looks at the whole body to identify and address any imbalances; you may come in with a neck problem but your whole body will be assessed and addressed so we get to the root cause of the problem which may turn out to be coming from your pelvis not sitting correctly. Amatsu treats the underlying problem not just the symptoms you are experiencing. Amatsu uses a variety of diagnostics tools from a range of disciplines, including kinesiology muscle testing and orthopaedic tests; it uses massage, mobilisation and re-patterning techniques, together with natural body movement, to bring the body back into it’s natural alignment. Restoring balance, or biotensegrity to the body using natural body movement enables all ligaments, organs, bones, muscles and fascia return to having their own space. Having their own space means that they are able to function optimally. The result? The body is empowered to heal itself, allowing anatomical and physiological health problems improve. The term "Dis-ease" means a lack of ease or harmony within the body. When the body is subject to stress, trauma or injury, biotensegrity is compromised; ligaments, bones, fascia, muscles, organs no longer 'float' in their own space and instead they move into the space of others and therefore in a state of dis-ease; more commonly known as disease💡
Taijutsu, or natural body movement as it directly translates from Japanese where Amatsu has it's roots, is used throughout an Amatsu treatment to facilitate a deeper, whole body correction giving a longer-lasting result.

Amatsu is still a relatively unknown gem within the UK, with very few practitioners around, so clients often find Amatsu when they've tried all sorts of medical and complimentary therapies to relieve them from their pain and discomfort, and they turn to Amatsu as a last resort.
Amatsu offers something different, which is hard to describe but it can give incredible results. In theory, there is no health issue that Amatsu can't help improve; Amatsu is all about re-balancing your body, so that all your bones, ligaments, tendons and organs are all in their own unique space and therefore have the capability to perform their function optimally.
So if you're experiencing joint pain, received whiplash from a car accident or have an ongoing health problem you'd like to get sorted, then come and give Amatsu a try to see if we can help you get your health back.

A few of the common health problems that Amatsu has been known to improve are:
- Back pain
- Knee pain - ITB problems - IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) - Shoulder and other joint problems - Sports injuries including sprained ankles - Neck pain - Low energy |
- Sciatica
- Low immune systems - Poor sleep - Flexibility and stability issues - Balance problems or always bumping into things - Tinnitus - Skin conditions - Headaches / migraines |
Amatsu uses various assessment techniques including muscle testing, visual asymmetry, range and touch to ascertain what treatment the body is needing at that time to bring about the largest correction to re-establish balance and alignment within the body. Amatsu uses a type of massage (called Anma), mobilisation and re-patterning techniques to provide the necessary corrections.
All Amatsu treatments are gentle, involving no cracking or clicking of the body. This makes Amatsu a great therapy for all ages.
Every Amatsu treatment is different, even on the same person each time they visit. This is because Amatsu treats the body as a whole, and every hour, day, week, we put our body's through a plethora of stress, strain, trauma and injury, which impacts the body's natural alignment. Amatsu will work with whatever the body is presenting on the day of treatment as this will be key to enable the body to get to a place where it can heal itself from everyday minor impacts.

Still curious? The best way to find out is to book in for a treatment.
This all depends on you, your body, your lifestyle and especially how long your body has been living in a state of dis-ease. Some clients feel an immediate relief or benefit during their treatment time, others it takes longer. Over the 48 hours post an Amatsu treatment, your body is adapting to its new 'balanced' healthier position, therefore it can take up to 48 hours for the body to fully integrate the treatment and for you to feel its full benefit and some people can feel worse before they feel better during this time. You can expedite integration by taking onboard the aftercare and self-care advice mentioned here.
We advise that after your initial treatment you have a follow up treatment a week later. This is to see how your body has held on to the corrections made previously as well as to perhaps reinforce the original correction. This enables your body to remember what its healthy balanced position actually is and how it feels to be in this healthier position. The longer you have been feeling unwell or been injured, the more reminders your body needs through more treatments. After an injury, stress or trauma, your body will help you cope by adapting your body in certain ways that'll help you manage the pain being suffered. Over time, more and more adaptations occur until the body can't cope anymore and this is when many of us give in and seek help. At this point though, more treatments will be required as each treatment corrects a layer of adaptations within the body. This is known as the onion layer. This is why it is rare that any treatment you have will be the same. As a guide, it takes one month of treatment for every year your body has been ‘coping’ with a condition of dis-ease. This can also vary depending on the different external factors that affect the healing process (see The Big 5 mentioned below). We’ll take it one treatment at a time and work together to understand how you can best keep your body in balance and give yourself long term health.
Once the original health problem/condition has healed itself, we do advise regular treatments or 'balances', which is like a body ‘MOT’ to keep your body running optimally. Sometimes these are monthly, 6 weekly or for the very few, 6 monthly; it all depends on you and your individual lifestyle and pressures. You'll soon start to learn how long you can go before you feel you need a top up!

For health and wellbeing to exist 5 life factors must be in balance. We call this our 'Godai' meaning 'The Big 5'.
- - Physical: this is your physical body i.e. bones, muscles and organs.
- - Chemical: your diet (food and drink) and hormones and enzymes.
- - Emotional: emotions, feelings and thoughts.
- - Electrical: energy (meridian lines) and nerve impulses which affect how your body is communicating.
- - Environmental: this is all to do with our work, our life, our interaction with our surroundings.
We’ll discuss this both during and after your treatment. Everyone is different so aftercare is tailored to each individual client. It can take up to 48 hours for your body to feel a real benefit from the treatment as during this time your body is re-adjusting and assimilating it's new, more healthy state and is "getting back into the swing of things". Therefore most importantly, please listen to your body and be kind to yourself over the 48 hours that follow a treatment.
Self care advice that everyone will benefit from post treatment are:
Self care advice that everyone will benefit from post treatment are:
- Go for a 20 minute gentle walk as soon as possible post treatment, with arms freely flowing in their natural gait i.e. opposite arm swings with the leg that has taken the step forward.
- Drink plenty of water. This helps to flush out the toxins that have been released during treatment.
- Avoid overly rich or spicy food.
- Keep alcohol to a minimum.
- Get a good night sleep - rest and sleep is when the body truly shuts down and repairs itself.
- Listen to your body. Some may feel tired or lethargic post treatment, others will feel ‘buzzy’ and energised.
- Avoid any strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours, preferably 48 hours.
You remain fully clothed throughout an Amatsu treatment so please wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing like tracksuit bottoms instead of jeans. If you are coming straight from work, you’re welcome to change in my treatment room before and after treatment.

Skin conditions such as acne or eczema can improve by having Amatsu treatments because quite often these conditions are caused by your body being in a state of dis-ease or stress and perhaps your liver not filtering as it should. As Amatsu 'balances' your body, ensuring that all ligaments, bones, organs, intestinal valves, muscles are within their own space and therefore able to do their job efficiently and effectively, the body is no longer under stress and optimal health can occur. Skin conditions can obviously be affected by the more obvious factors like hygiene, products used and lifestyle but if you're already addressing these areas, and are still fed up with your "bad skin" then why not try Amatsu, it could be what your body is screaming out for.
If your body, through injury, trauma, stress or strain has lost its naturally balanced state, then energy is lost by your body coping and compensating for being out of balance. This means that more energy is consumed on day to day functioning, leaving less energy for fun, living and lifestyle.
An Amatsu treatment costs £50. Your first Amatsu treatment will take an hour as this will include going through detailed medical history and also gives us more time to explain the treatment.
Follow up treatments will take up to 45 minutes.

Amatsu therapy originates from the Japanese martial arts tradition of Bujinkan Ninjutsu, often called Budo.
The connection between Budo & Amatsu came the inspirational martial arts sensei Dr Hatsumi. Dr Hatsumi was not just a martial arts teacher but also a qualified osteopath who incorporated Budo's core principle of Taijutsu (natural body movement) within his osteopathic treatments to great effect. |
"If you can make someone crumple to the floor during a martial arts session by applying gentle Taijutsu to one critical weak point within your opponents body i.e. a kyushu, then the reverse must also be true. You can use a kyushu with your Taijutsu to create great change within a client's body to provide an opportunity for great healing."
In 1986, Dr Hatsumi invited three osteopaths from the British Isles to learn the art of Amatsu: Dennis Bartram from Hartlepool, Chris Roworth from Hillingdon and William Doolan from Dublin. Dennis, Chris and William trained with Dr Hatsumi over a prolonged period, during which time, they used Western methods to evaluate the effects of Amatsu and formulate a therapy that was true to Dr Hatsumi’s teachings yet scientific enough for the Western world. The three guys returned to their home towns and set up training schools as per Dr Hatsumi’s wishes: that the world should know about Amatsu. This has allowed Amatsu to grow in Europe with the formation of new Amatsu schools throughout England and Ireland. Each of these founders have developed their own interpretation of Dr Hatsumi’s teachings and have gone on to teach their own understanding of Amatsu.
